Beginning Drawing with Roger Towndrow
Beginning Drawing – A Playful Introduction to Seeing & Mark-Making
This friendly, confidence-building drawing course is designed for anyone who wants to start drawing – or start again – without pressure, perfection, or pre-requisites.
Roger takes a playful, exploratory approach to drawing, using the Art Room itself as his main source of inspiration. Through gentle warm-up exercises like mark-making, drawing to music, and quick observational sketches, you’ll loosen up, quiet the inner critic, and begin to enjoy the simple act of putting lines on paper.
From there, you’ll start to explore the space around you – mapping the room, noticing “landmarks”, pathways, corners, light, objects and atmosphere. You’ll use these observations as the basis for more developed drawings, whether that’s still life, expressive studies, or imaginative responses to what you see and feel.
Across the course Roger will introduce and explore the core elements of drawing, including:
• Line and contour
• Tone and light
• Composition and viewpoint
• Space and perspective
• Scale and proportion
Each session includes:
– A short, accessible demo or prompt
– Time for your own focused drawing (from objects, the room, photos or imagination)
– One-to-one support with ideas, materials and techniques
– A relaxed (optional!) group look at the work at the end, to share insights and questions
Roger is the former Head of Fine Art and Drawing at Falmouth University.
